Skin Allergy On Face? What Are The Causes And Treatments For It

Our body is so smart that it can regulate all the body functions to a steady rhythm without any effort from us. I mean, we don’t have to tell our hearts when to start and when to stop pumping. Our body automatically gets rid of foreign and harmful objects it comes in contact.

However, skin allergy on face, allergy on skin, allergy on stomach, and other forms of allergy can happen to some people with hypersensitive responses. The body overreacts with a certain allergen and may result in allergic symptoms.

There are many types of allergies and many types of causes. But most of the time, it presents as redness, itchiness, swelling of the face, itchy face rash, and sneezing.

1) What Causes Skin Allergy On Face?

causes of skin allergy

Many times, the face shows the symptom of the allergy. It can present as rash on face or swelling. Here are some things that may cause allergic reactions on the face.

1. Pollen

This is a nightmare for people who are allergic to pollen. This is an expected seasonal allergy that will hit you every year. In the US, 20% of the population has pollen allergy. This can be as mild as a runny nose, face rash, teary eyes, and worse, it can aggravate asthma symptoms.

2. Hair Dye

Hair dyes always have this instruction to test for allergy first before covering your hair with it. This is because many hair dyes have paraphenylenediamine (PPD) which is known to cause allergy to many people. Symptoms can range from allergy rash, redness, and swelling on areas that came in contact with the chemical.

3. Skin And Hair Care Products

Many skin and hair care products contain fragrance and other preservatives that prolong the shelf life of the product. However, a small fraction of the population is sensitive to these ingredients and may experience itchy skin rash on the face, scalp, and hands.

4. Cosmetics

The same chemicals present in skin and hair care products may also be present in cosmetics. Cosmetics also use fragrant ingredients to give their products a pleasant smell. The same product that aims to make you look more beautiful can potentially trigger allergy on the face.

5. Food

Most food allergies present symptoms covering gastrointestinal disturbance. However, severe allergy is not limited to the method of the consumption of products. Even food allergies can cause wheezing, swollen face, itchy and teary eyes, and even skin rashes on the face, neck, chest, and back. An anti allergy for skin treatment may be immediately required.

Skin allergy can range from a simple itch to hives! Face allergy treatment, or any form of allergy, should not be delayed. Symptoms may worsen as time passes by so you would need to deal with it with the fastest way you can.

  • Anti-histamines

  • With the first symptom of allergy, you should inform someone about your allergic condition and look for anti-histamine. Make sure that someone knows about your condition allergy can progress to worse conditions if not addressed immediately.

  • Corticosteroids

  • An allergic reaction is a result of our body’s hyper-reaction to an allergen. Corticosteroids can alleviate the body’s immune response to the allergen and relieve swelling.

  • EpiPen

  • The worst allergy cannot be addressed by anti-histamines and corticosteroids alone. A severe anaphylactic shock may need to be countered by adrenaline. If you are allergic to a long list of stuff, it’s best that you keep an EpiPen in your pocket.

3) How To Prevent Skin Allergy?

reduce skin allergy
The worst allergy case, anaphylaxis, will need immediate medical attention and emergency epinephrine shot. Treatment may require some anti-histamines and corticosteroids to quell the swelling. However, preventing the allergy is your best and most effective first step.

  • Avoid Foods That Trigger Your Allergy

  • An allergic reaction can present itself differently every time. It can be in the form of GI disturbance or some skin anomaly. To avoid allergy caused by food, be sure to know what is the food that you eat. In restaurants, ask and make sure that what you are ordering does not have anything you are allergic with.

  • List Down The Medications You Are Allergic With

  • Make a list of the drugs you are allergic to. Do some research and make a list of medications that contain the chemical you are allergic with. This list can potentially save you in the future and prevent you from catching skin allergy on face.

  • Routine Skin Test

  • Whenever you are trying out a new skin care or cosmetic product, make sure that it passes a simple skin test before using them thoroughly. Using a cotton bud, apply a small amount behind the ear and let it sit for 48 hours. The 48hour length covers for the delayed allergic reaction. Do not use the product if it leads to itching, redness, or swelling.
