Everything positioned in our body has its purpose, even the least recognized body part, not forgetting the hair in our bodies. As we grow up, all we can see is the hair growing on our heads only. As adolescent hits up, hair starts growing in other private parts of the body. Sometimes we feel embarrassed and shy about what is happening in our body. For those who passed this stage, am sure you all came to understand that it was a regular stage and we all have to go through it. Although we all have to grow pubic hair, most of us don’t understand what the purpose of pubic hair is. It was never placed there by accident. In the earlier times of the day, it was either both the mother and her daughter had pubic hair, or the daughter didn’t have them. This has changed, and in many cases today, the mother also doesn’t have pubic hair. Most of us think shaving pubic hair is all about maintaining a personal hygiene such as keeping away pubic lice. This has nothing to do with that but what fashion and magazines dictate you to do. So what is the purpose of pubic hair and why do they exist and remain important in our bodies?
What Is The Purpose Of Pubic Hair?
The following are the purposes of pubic hair;
1. Sign Of Maturity
We all start developing pubic hair at the beginning of puberty. This is unless one has a health problem related to hair growth. Puberty period is the time young people get to be sexually mature. Therefore the pubic hair is a sign that one is mature and can procreate.
2. Natural Protection From Viruses And Bacteria
This is a biological purpose of pubic hair. Pubic hair offers a natural barrier to help keep things cleans down there. Female pubic hair helps to decrease contact with viruses and bacteria to keep the tender skin around the genital area from being abraded. When pubic hair is completely removed, as a lady wears clothes, the skin down there can be irritated. Pubic hair removal naturally inflames hair follicle leaving behind open wounds. Offering protection is, therefore, one of the main purposes of pubic hair in the female reproductive system. The productive system is protected from bacterial pathogens such as streptococcus.
3. Pubic Hair Helps Control Moisture In The Genital Area
This is one of the most stated reasons why hair grows on private parts. Pubic hair controls moisture by wicking it up and away from the skin. Through this, the chances of getting yeast infection and breakdown of the skin. Without the pubic hair, the sweat would be absorbed by the clothes. The pubic hair keeps the skin around the genital area moist and balanced.
4. Boosts Sexual Sensation
This is one of my favorite reasons on what is the purpose of pubic hair. At the end of each hair follicle there, exists a nerve ending. These nerve endings are different from the other nerve endings whose purpose in maintaining pressure and temperature. When one hair is brushed, a little sensation is sent down the shaft of the nerve ending. The feelings are registered together in the brain as a result of light touch. If you shave completely, you will miss out a wide range of stimulation, and you can’t enjoy when your partner touches you or blows some warm air across your pubic hair.
5. Pheromone Diffusion
This is one of the most stated reasons as to what is the purpose of pubic hair. There is one biological purpose of pubic hair which is that it helps in spreading pheromones. Research shows that apocrine glands secrete a smelly substance which mixes with the bacteria that comes from the oil given off from the sebaceous gland. This makes a unique substance that may have some odor or not. The pheromones can be trapped in the armpit hair and pubic hair of both women and men. The pheromone enhances sexual awareness and makes people desire for sex. This can be transmitted through the smell.
6. Pubic Hair Eases Friction
Pubic hair help in reducing frictions when parts if the body rub together. Imagine the feeling of blisters in your hands, and then imagine that feeling on your private areas. Pubic hair helps in easing friction during sexual intercourse since the body rubs on each other. Therefore, when thinking about what is the purpose of pubic hair and thinking of shaving it, just think of having blisters down there. It would automatically be the most irritating feeling ever.
7. Pubic Hair Prevents STIs
A study has proven that less hair might mean more sexually transmitted infections. People who practice extreme grooming have higher chances of contracting these infections such as Herpes, HPV, and syphilis. When thinking of what is the purpose of pubic hair always remember that shaving the pubic hair and waxing may create some little abrasions in the skin thus making it easier for infections to make their way in.
8. Regulation Of Body Temperature
The hair follicles help with sweating. Each hair follicle has sebaceous glands which release oil into the hair which in turn allows oil to go above the skin surface. When oil evaporates, the skin is cooled because of the latent heat.
9. Prevention Of Genital Warts
In this purpose of pubic hair in the female reproductive system, areas near or on the vulva can contact genital warts if one has shaved the pubic hair. Despite pubic hair not completely prevent it, it helps the skin to skin contact with someone who may already be having it. The genital warts are always white or reddish and cannot be seen easily with the naked eye.
In conclusion, pubic hair should not be shaved as most of the women do. In fact, over 84% of the women shave their pubic hair. Shaving of pubic hair has therefore done more harm than good. It’s never late to declare an end to the war on pubic hair. They are nothing to be embarrassed or get ashamed of. With the above benefits and purposes of pubic hair, I hope they are compelling reasons to leave the hair down there alone.
