Causes Of Wrinkles: Lifestyle Factors That Actually Causes Wrinkles

Wrinkles are not only a product of your age, but your lifestyle choices could also be causing your skin to age prematurely! What are these causes and how do you combat them? Keep reading to find out!

1.What Are Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are folds, ridges, or creases on your skin that are at least 2 mm deep. They can be temporary or permanent and can be found in various spots like around the mouth, neck, back of the hands, arms, and eyes.

Wrinkles around eyes and neck are more common and usually appear in older people, but anyone can have them at any age.

The most common causes of wrinkles are environmental and lifestyle-related factors or a combination of both. Your routines and habits can also be causing your skin to wrinkle.

2. Symptoms Of Wrinkles

Wrinkles appear as creases or lines on your skin. Some even occur as deep furrows or crevices. The more noticeable ones are those around your eyes, along the neck, and around your mouth. They make you look old and tired.

3. Lifestyle Habits And Factors That Can Cause Wrinkles

Although you may not know it, many simple things that you do daily and often, unconsciously, could be the reason why you look older than your actual age. So, what causes wrinkles?

Here is a list of the most common causes of wrinkles, factors and habits that could be adding years to your age.

You Have Favorite Facial Expressions

Facial expressions, especially frowning and smiling, which use facial muscles can lead to fine lines that can progress into wrinkles on face. Doing certain expressions repeatedly also enhances this effect.

You Can Last For Days Without Sunscreen

One of the most common mistakes people make is using sunscreen sparingly, optionally or only during beach trips. This exposes your skin to harmful UV rays that speed up aging by breaking down elastin and collagen fibers in your skin.

Collagen and elastin are connective tissues in the dermis that give your skin elasticity and strength. Without them, your skin droops and fine lines develop into wrinkles.

According to Dr. Rod Rohrich, a plastic surgeon at the UT Southwestern Medical Center, the two most important things for wrinkle prevention are applying sunscreen and deliberately avoiding the sun.

Even driving without sunscreen can damage your skin badly, so bad that more people are found to have significantly more wrinkles and cases of skin cancer on the left side of their faces, the side that the sun hits while driving.

You Love Chewing Gum

Prolonged chewing means contracting and relaxing the same facial muscles over and over again. Much like the facial expressions, this continuously changes the shape of the mouth and can lead to wrinkles.

Usually, this practice causes the corners of your mouth to turn downwards, and emphasize the muscles underneath your jawline, according to Dr. Joel Schlessinger, dermatologist, and LovelySkin.com CEO. He adds that once these form, they are hard to remove.

You Sleep On Your Side Or Your Stomach

According to New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, pushing your face on your pillow forms creases on your skin, and these can eventually become permanent wrinkles.

Frowning while you sleep and the use of abrasive cotton pillowcases also add to the risk of developing wrinkles.

You Smoke Cigarettes

Smoking also accelerates skin aging by reducing blood flow to your skin. Because of this, your skin cells become deprived of nutrients and oxygen needed for repair and normal processes, according to a published article in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

This also causes toxins and wastes to build up in cells, causing damage or even cellular death. Moreover, chemicals from cigarette smoke break down fibers and elastin, while the act of pursing your lips create creases around your mouth.

You Love Drinking Alcohol

To complete the usual combo, alcohol drinking also causes wrinkles by dehydrating or draining moisture from your skin, according to Dr. James Marotta, a dual-board certified plastic surgeon. According to him, your skin appears less fresh and plump immediately after a night of drinking.

When this happens regularly, your skin tissues deteriorate, causing a loss of elasticity and eventually, wrinkles form. Dr. Marotta also adds that alcohol affects your body’s level of Vitamin A, an antioxidant important in cell regeneration and collagen production.

You Don’t Clean Your Face Thoroughly Before You Sleep

Leaving dirt and makeup on your face for too long is like asking for wrinkles. These products and pollutants can penetrate your pores, damaging elastin and collagen fibers. Because of this, you develop wrinkles.

Makeup can also cake up and build-up along ridges on your skin, and this makes fine lines that are already present even more prominent.

You Tug And Pull At Your Skin

Whether applying makeup or drying up, you must never tug, stretch, or pull at your skin forcefully. I mean stretching your mouth wide open or lifting your eyebrows way too high.

This practice invites wrinkles especially for older people with skin that does not bounce back as effectively.

You Love Sweet Treats

We all know that sugar has adverse effects on your waistline and weight, but it can also damage your skin, according to Alexiades-Armenakas. She explains that in a process called glycation, sugar molecules bind to your tissues.

When this happens, harmful molecules are formed in your bloodstream that causes damage to elastin and collagen fibers.

  • Spending Too Much Time Using Your Gadgets

Most of us cannot even survive without a smartphone, iPad, tablet, or laptop. This can also cause wrinkles, especially around the neck and chin since you spend hours with your head turned at an unusual angle staring at a screen. Stubborn neck wrinkles can result from doing so.

4. How To Minimize Or Get Rid Of Wrinkles

There are many ways you might be causing wrinkles without your knowledge, but fortunately, there are also simple ways to get rid or prevent these pesky lines.

  • Because you can’t avoid the sun completely, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a water-resistant and broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher everyday, even if you don’t plan to go outside.
  • To avoid getting wrinkles under eyes and around them, try not to pull or stretch your eyes while applying eyeliner, eyeshadow, or mascara. The same goes with your cheeks and forehead. When drying up, pat your skin instead of wiping the water off.
  • Sleep on your back or upgrade to satin or copper pillow cases that are less abrasive on the skin. These covers reduce crow’s feet appearance and can even help smooth out your skin, according to a study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
  • Use mouthwash, mints, or breath strips instead of gum.
  • Clean your face thoroughly and moisturize your skin every night before going to bed. Never leave makeup on while you sleep.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and an alcohol-free toner.
  • Choose products that contain ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. These are proven to fight against signs of aging.
  • Stay hydrated and load up on fruits and vegetables. Minimize your sugar intake.
  • Refrain from smoking or drinking.
  • Minimize wrinkles on neck and chin areas by using a tablet stand or propping your gadget a little farther away to prevent you from straining your neck and eyes. You can also use neck firming creams to cure this.

Aging has a lot to do with simple, everyday lifestyle choices. Thankfully, there are also a lot of cheap and easy ways to minimize or prevent its signs and symptoms.
Incorporating Dermay Maple Sugar into your skincare routine is one such solution. Designed to restore elastin and collagen in your skin, Dermay Maple Sugar maintains its elasticity while addressing common signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet.”
